Also known as a safety cartridge, needle cartridge systems are part of tattoo machines that are used by many artists. The tattoo needle cartridges are purchased pre-packaged, sterile and are discarded after every use into an approved sharps container. This system is considered a safer alternative because the needle is contained in a cartridge with a backflow preventer until use, reducing the risk of cross-contamination and needle stick injury for the artists. Cartridge needles systems with no backflow preventer (also known as a membrane or barrier), are not guaranteed to prevent the contamination of blood and body fluids inside the grip sleeve or the drive bar, which may contaminate the needle.
Cartridges are available in every grouping and style of needle, including bugpin. The difference is that the cartridges are disposable, making them very convenient and sterile because they are unable to be reused. This convenience does come at a cost though, as they are more expensive than standard needles. Cartridges are only to be used in Rotary Machines. They come in two styles of tips; open and closed.
